Brian Mercer

Dr. Brian Mercer joined the Applied Research Institute in November 2016. He is a Research Engineer working with the Accelerated Materials Research Group as a computational modeling specialist and focuses much of his research on multiscale modeling of engineering materials and manufacturing processes.

Dr. Mercer received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles in 2010 and received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 2016. His Ph.D. dissertation research, completed jointly with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory through the Lawrence Graduate Scholar fellowship, involved molecular dynamics modeling of Kevlar fiber failure under high strain-rate loading using reactive potentials.

Dr. Mercer has also conducted research, published articles, and given conference presentations on multiscale finite element methods and theory.
