Engineers Without Borders Award for Ann Witmer
Engineers Without Borders-UIUC Faculty Advisor Ann-Perry Witmer has been named the winner of the 2020 Peter J. Bosscher Award by EWB-USA for providing outstanding leadership and mentorship to the student chapter. The national award is given to one faculty advisor each year and commemorates the late Peter J. Bosscher, an EWB-USA faculty advisor at the University of Wisconsin and active EWB-USA member.
Witmer has served as faculty advisor to the University of Illinois chapter since 2014, when she arrived on campus as an instructor in the freshman engineering program. After earning her Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) in 2018 while developing an emerging engineering discipline in Contextual Innovation and Process, she became a visiting research scientist with the Applied Research Institute and a lecturer in ABE, where she continued to conduct research on contextual engineering design based on user needs and societal conditions.
EWB-UIUC is one of the largest Engineers Without Borders chapters in the nation, and currently works in four countries in North, South, and Central America as well as Africa. Student participants serve client communities by collaboratively developing, designing and installing engineered infrastructure such as water systems, bridges, and sanitary latrines.
