Biography

Dr. Heather Filippini is a Principal Research Scientist at the Illinois Applied Research Institute where she co-leads the Algorithms & Software group. She has 15 years of experience in developing algorithms for remote sensing systems in a variety of domains, including optical and radar sensors.

Dr. Filippini’s work has focused on data-to-decision algorithms. She leverages knowledge of sensor and data phenomenology and mathematical modeling to automatically identify complex signals in real-world environments to reduce the analysis burden on the end-users. Her research interests include image processing, computer vision problems, and navigation and tracking algorithms. She has also worked on algorithm design for high-performance computing applications.

She earned her Ph.D in 2008 in the joint program in Bioengineering offered by the University of California, Berkeley and University of California, San Francisco. Her academic work developed and tested mathematical models of human depth perception. She earned her A.B. magna cum laude in Physics with a concentration in Biophysics from Harvard University in 2002.
