Mohamed Aboukhatwa

Senior Research Engineer

Mohamed Aboukhatwa, a Senior Research Scientist, has been with ARI since 2014. Mohamed has expertise in alloy development, advanced metals manufacturing processes, phase transformations, mechanical behavior, wear, and fracture mechanics. He joined ARI because he was interested in translating ideas into end products. Each of Mohamed’s projects at ARI is significantly different from his prior projects, meaning that he is always learning and contributing to something new. Mohamed’s research at ARI focuses on light weight multifunctional materials, advanced surface modification processes, additive manufacturing, and thermodynamic optimization of metallic alloys. Specifically, he has worked with an industry partner on increasing recycling and reducing downcycling of aerospace aluminum alloys by recycling scrap from decommissioned airplanes into a high-strength castable variant with mechanical properties equivalent to premium aluminum casting alloys. The developed recycling process was demonstrated by casting cylinder heads directly from recycled aluminum, offering a direct replacement to primary casting alloys. Mohamed is also working on developing new tools and strategies for optimizing process parameters for additive manufacturing, mitigating inconsistencies, and accelerating qualification of additively manufactured components.
